This blended learning course provides a comprehensive introduction to solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, designed for learners interested in gaining foundational and intermediate knowledge in solar energy technology. Through a mix of engaging online modules and a hands-on installation lab, participants will develop the skills and confidence needed to understand, assess, and participate in solar PV projects.
The online portion of the course covers essential theory, including solar energy principles, PV system components, system configurations, site assessment, safety protocols, and the basics of sizing and electrical integration. Learners will identify and explore the function of key components such as modules, inverters, racking systems, charge controllers, and storage options.
The course culminates with an in-person, half-day practical session where participants will work collaboratively to install and commission a small solar PV array. This hands-on component reinforces theoretical learning and provides valuable real-world experience with tools, safety equipment, and installation procedures.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the basic principles of solar energy and PV technology.
- Identify and describe major PV system components and their functions.
- Analyze basic system design and performance considerations.
- Demonstrate safe practices when working with PV systems.
- Participate in the installation and commissioning of a small solar array.
Please note that this is a popular course and you are expected to complete the online work at least 1 week before the in-shop portion. If you do not complete the online work in time, you will be removed from the registration.

I got my start in the Electrical trade in 1999, working as an apprentice for Canem Systems and Western Electrical in Calgary, engaging in all aspects of commercial and residential electrical work. I finished apprenticeship schooling in 2005, graduating with my Red Seal. I was hired at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in 2006 to instruct electrical apprentices. I remained a faculty member until 2014, when my family and I decided to relocate to Vancouver Island.
Once I had settled in the Comox Valley region, I started a successful electrical company specializing in new home construction, service upgrades, service calls and some light commercial work.
With WJETS I teach Code Update Courses, Conduit Bending (levels 1-3) Fire Alarm, Fiber Optic and also hold contracts for Academic Support. In addition, I am an electrical instructor at North Island college, Campbell River Campus.
