Stationary Generation Technician

General overview

Electrical generation is essential to the electrical industry and our modern lifestyle. Generation occurs through many processes, but most utilize magnetic generation as its basis for operation. This course will expand on the electrician’s understanding of that process. This course is intended to provide you, as an electrician, with the essential operational knowledge, safety aspects, and hands-on experience to open exciting new career opportunities as a stationary generation technician.

In this course, you will learn the fundamental roles and responsibilities associated with the stationary generation process. Expanding on your knowledge as an electrician, we will cover critical elements of the stationary generation trade. We will cover an overview of the process in general, and then focus on the practical aspects of stationary generation from a technician perspective. We will work to connect this new information to theoretical requirements related to safety and operation. You will learn the primary components of the stationary generator and the process of generation. You will learn the procedures required to successfully, and safely become a stationary generation technician. You will gain valuable hands-on experience in replicating many of the required tasks of stationary generation technicians. Although this will require more practice in the field to perfect, this will provide you with all the fundamental tools and knowledge you will require to enter the stationary generation field.

This is a hybrid delivered program consisting of the following:

Online learning. You must satisfactorily complete an asynchronous online course within the required timeframe.
In-shop component. We will conduct the practical labs and field requirements during this time. You must have successfully completed the online segment to be permitted to attend the in-shop training.

Prerequisites: Participants in this course must be at least a level 3 apprentice, preferably a Journeyperson (Red Seal Electrician). 

This program is designed for ticketed electricians.
Ability to perform physical work tasks. This is a hands-on job and requires the ability to lift, carry, and perform physical work.
Program requirements:

Online access to be able to complete the online learning component via Moodle.
PPE for in-shop components:
Safety glasses,
safety boots, and
working clothes which will get dirty.
Food allergen alert. We will be using food products to simulate the harsh resins used in the field. Corn syrup and cake frosting will be used as substitutes.
Learning materials not provided:

The textbook recommended for this course is the Handbook of Large Hydro Generators: Operation and Maintenance (2021) by Glen Mottershead, Stefano Bomben, Isidor Kersenbaum, and Jeff Klemper. It is available online or in print.

The online version of the textbook allows for multiple access points at the same time. It is strongly recommended that students purchase the book as it will be referenced as reading material throughout the course. It is also commonly used as a reference for Stationary Generation Technicians in the field, so it is a wise investment for their careers.
