Cable Splicing and Termination

  • Shrink Technologies. Heat Shrink versus Cold Shrink
  • Material Technology
  • Human Factors in Splicing
  • Lab preparing and splicing cable
  • Lab preparing and terminating cable

Participants will perform two cable preparations each; one using no special tools, the other using Speed Systems Cable tools.

Tools required for course: Pen, good needle nose pliers, sharp razor knife, measuring tape, side cutters, felt pen or paint marker, thin gloves.


Location: IBEW Local 993 Hall

The IBEW Local 993 Hall has a large fenced yard around the back of the building.

Power Systems Electrician
Electrical Maintenance and Safety Instructor

John started working in the Pulp and Paper industry in 1973. In 1979 he completed his Refrigeration Apprenticeship, and worked in the trade for 4 years, then started his Electrical Apprentiship in 1988. For the next 10 years he worked as an area electrician, and then went back to school part time, to gain his Power Systems qualifications. Upon completion, he became the Lead Electrician for the Crofton Mill Substation and power systems; working in coordination with the Substation Engineer.

During this time, he spent 22 years as the Electrical Safety Committee Chairman, and taught Electrical Safety courses within the organization.

In 1992, he began teaching ‘part time’ for The Electricity Forum‘ and continues to instruct for this international teaching group.

John has been a member of the IBEW since 2012 as an instructor for WJETS.
