Training Type: Stress Management
This course is designed specifically for workers in the skilled trades to better understand stress and develop practical strategies for managing it both on and off the job site. Members will learn why stress management is particularly important in the construction industry and how unmanaged stress can affect physical and mental health.
The course explores what stress is, how it affects the body and mind, and how to recognize early warning signs of stress in themselves and others. Members will also learn practical tools for managing stress on and off the job, decreasing mental health stigma, conflict resolution and building personal resilience.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Explain why stress management is important in the construction industry and understand how workplace demands can contribute to stress.
2. Define stress and describe how it affects the body and mind, including the short- and long-term impacts on mental and physical health.
3. Recognize common signs and signals of stress in themselves and their coworkers, including emotional, physical, and behavioural indicators.
4. Apply practical stress management strategies that can be used on the job site and in everyday life to reduce stress.
5. Demonstrate effective communication techniques that support respectful conversations, teamwork, and problem-solving in stressful situations.
6. Identify constructive approaches to conflict resolution that help reduce workplace tension and improve collaboration.
7. Understand the connection between stress and physical health, including fatigue, substance use, injury risk, and long-term health outcomes.
8. Describe strategies for building personal resilience, enabling workers to better cope with workplace pressures and adapt to challenges.
9. Identify available supports and resources, including workplace programs, community services, counselling services and crisis supports.
